Tadelakt

Tadelakt in Phoenix & Scottsdale, AZ

Tadelakt is the lime plaster developed in Marrakech for hammams, and it is still the only traditional finish that is genuinely waterproof without a film on top of it. The lime is troweled, compressed with a smooth stone until the pores close, then cured with black olive soap. The soap reacts with the lime to form a water-repellent layer inside the surface rather than over it.

The result is seamless. No grout, no joints, rounded corners, and the ability to run a single unbroken surface from a shower wall across a bench and into a basin. It is the most labour-intensive finish we offer, and on the right bathroom it is the one nothing else substitutes for.

What’s included

What you get with tadelakt

Every item below appears as a line on your written estimate, so you can compare our scope against any other bid without guessing what each one covers.

  • 01

    Waterproofing verified before we start

Tadelakt is a finish, not a tanking system. We confirm the substrate behind it is correctly waterproofed, or we get that done first. This is not negotiable and it is where we lose jobs to people who will skip it.

  • 02

    Sample panels, wet and dry

Tadelakt looks different wet than dry, which matters more here than for any other finish because most of it goes in showers. You approve a panel you have seen both ways.

  • 03

Lime plaster applied in two coats

Traditional lime plaster with the correct aggregate, applied and then worked as it sets. The timing is the skill: the compression stage has a window measured in minutes, not hours.

  • 04

    Stone burnishing

Compressed by hand with a smooth river stone until the surface closes and takes its characteristic soft lustre. This is the stage that makes it tadelakt and there is no mechanical shortcut for it.

  • 05

    Olive soap cure

Black olive soap applied and worked in, then left to react with the lime. This forms the water-repellent surface. It is repeated on wet-area installations.

  • 06

    Rounded junctions and integrated details

Coved corners, formed benches, niches, basins and thresholds detailed as continuous surfaces so there is no joint for water to find.

Preparation

How the surface gets ready

This sequence is most of the hours on a tadelakt job, and it is the part that decides whether the finish still looks right in year five. It is also the part that gets skipped by the cheapest bid you receive.

Hand compressing a lime plaster wall with a smooth burnishing stone, the worked area showing a soft lustre
  1. 1Confirm the waterproofingMembrane or tanking system checked and, where absent, installed and tested. Everything after this depends on it.
  2. 2Build the substrateA rigid, correctly rendered background with the curves and coves already formed in it. Tadelakt is thin: the shapes are built underneath, not sculpted in the finish.
  3. 3Contain the roomFull protection. Lime is caustic while wet and burnishing throws fine material, so the bathroom is sealed off from the rest of the house for the duration.
  4. 4Plaster and compressCoats applied and then worked continuously as the lime sets, with the burnishing timed to the material rather than the clock. Once a section is started it is finished.
  5. 5Soap, cure, and leave it aloneSoap treatment applied, then a genuine cure period before the room goes back into use. Rushing this is how a tadelakt shower ends up with water marks in month two.

Arizona conditions

What this climate does to tadelakt

A specification that works in a mild climate is not automatically right here. These are the local conditions that change how we scope and schedule this work.

  • Hard water is the real enemy here

Valley water is hard, and mineral deposits are what mark a tadelakt shower over time far more than water itself does. A squeegee after showering is the whole maintenance routine, and we say so plainly rather than pretending the finish is maintenance-free.

  • Dry air compresses the burnishing window

Tadelakt has to be compressed while the lime is at exactly the right stiffness. Phoenix air shortens that window considerably compared with the climate the technique was developed for, so sections are sized to what can be finished in one continuous pass.

  • It suits the architecture here

Curved walls, arched openings, formed niches and adobe-influenced massing are common in Valley custom homes, and tadelakt is one of very few waterproof finishes that turns a radius without a joint. Tile cannot do it without a cut every few inches.

  • Cure time is not weather-dependent, and cannot be rushed

Lime carbonates on its own schedule. A hot dry house does not speed that up, it just dries the surface faster than the depth. We build the cure into the programme and will not hand a shower back early.

Questions

Tadelakt questions

Anything not covered here, ask on the walkthrough. We’d rather over-explain than surprise you.

Is tadelakt actually waterproof?

The surface is water-repellent, genuinely and traditionally so, because the olive soap reacts with the lime to close it from within rather than coating it. Hammams have been built this way for centuries.

That is not the same as it being a waterproofing membrane. It goes over a properly tanked substrate, always. Any applicator who tells you tadelakt replaces the membrane is describing a leak.

How do I maintain a tadelakt shower?

Squeegee the walls after use, which handles the hard-water deposits that are the main issue in Phoenix. Use a pH-neutral or mild soap-based cleaner. Never use anything acidic, including most limescale removers and bathroom sprays, because acid dissolves lime.

Re-soaping every year or two on heavily used showers keeps the repellency topped up. It is a straightforward job and we will show you how, or come and do it.

Why does it cost more than tile?

Because it is hours. The burnishing and soaping stages are hand work that cannot be mechanised or rushed, the substrate has to be built more carefully than a tiled one, and the cure adds days to the programme with nobody on site.

It is the most expensive finish per square foot that we offer. We say that early so nobody spends a walkthrough discovering it.

Can it be used on a shower floor?

Yes, and it is done traditionally, but be aware it is a smooth surface. On a floor we usually recommend either a textured tadelakt or a different material underfoot with tadelakt on the walls and bench.

We will talk through slip resistance properly rather than leaving it as a surprise.

What colours can it be?

Lime-fast pigments only, which means the traditional earth range: creams, sands, ochres, terracottas, warm greys, and the deep blues and greens Morocco is known for. Bright and pastel colours are not achievable.

The colour also softens and lightens as it cures, which is why the sample panel is judged dry and cured rather than on the day it is made.

How is it different from microcement in a bathroom?

Microcement is a cement coating sealed with a polyurethane film on top; tadelakt is lime made repellent within itself. Microcement is more chemical- and scratch-resistant and cheaper. Tadelakt has a depth and softness under the hand that a sealed cement surface does not, and it does not have a film that can eventually wear through.

Microcement also goes over existing tile, which tadelakt does not. If you are covering a tiled bathroom without demolition, that usually settles it.

Can it be repaired?

Yes, and better than most waterproof surfaces, because lime accepts new lime. A skilled repair on a matte area can be very hard to find.

A repair on a heavily burnished area is more visible. We keep your mix and pigment record so a later repair starts from the right formula.
