Cabinet Painting & Refinishing

Cabinet Painting and Refinishing in Phoenix, AZ

Cabinet refinishing changes the single most visible surface in a kitchen for a fraction of what replacement costs, but only if it is done as a spray finish, not as a brush-and-roll paint job on cabinet doors.

We degrease, sand, prime and spray cabinetry across Phoenix and the Valley. Doors and drawer fronts are numbered, removed and finished flat so the film lays even, and boxes are masked and sprayed in place with containment around the work area.

What’s included

What you get with cabinet painting & refinishing

Every item below appears as a line on your written estimate, so you can compare our scope against any other bid without guessing what each one covers.

  • 01

Doors removed, numbered and sprayed flat

Every door and drawer front is labelled to its opening, taken off, and sprayed horizontally so the finish lays out evenly instead of sagging on a vertical face.

  • 02

    Serious degreasing

Kitchen cabinetry carries cooking oil, especially around the range and above the hood. Nothing bonds through grease, so degreasing comes before any sanding.

  • 03

    Sanding and bonding primer

Existing finish scuffed to a mechanical key, then a bonding primer suited to the substrate. Factory-finished MDF, laminate, oak and maple all behave differently.

  • 04

    Grain and defect filling

Where you want a smooth painted finish on open-grain oak, the grain is filled and sanded between coats rather than left to telegraph through the topcoat.

  • 05

    Durable sprayed topcoat

A cabinet-grade finish applied in multiple thin coats with proper flash time between them, then given real cure time before the doors go back on.

  • 06

    Rehang, adjust and reinstall hardware

Doors rehung to their numbered openings, hinges adjusted so the gaps are even, hardware reinstalled or new hardware fitted.

Preparation

How the surface gets ready

This sequence is most of the hours on a cabinet painting & refinishing job, and it is the part that decides whether the finish still looks right in year five. It is also the part that gets skipped by the cheapest bid you receive.

Finished wet bar with black lacquered cabinets, glass uppers and a white quartz backsplash
  1. 1Document and numberPhotograph the layout and label every door, drawer and hinge so nothing goes back in the wrong opening.
  2. 2Remove and containDoors and hardware off, boxes masked, counters and appliances covered, containment set around the kitchen with floor protection to the exit.
  3. 3Degrease and cleanAll faces and edges degreased, then rinsed and dried before abrasion.
  4. 4Sand and fillSurfaces scuffed uniformly, dents and chips filled, edges and profiles sanded by hand.
  5. 5Prime, sand, finishBonding primer sprayed, sanded flat, then finish coats sprayed with the correct flash time between them.
  6. 6Cure before reassemblyDoors stay off the boxes until the finish has hardened enough to handle, which is the main reason cabinet work takes days rather than hours.

Arizona conditions

What this climate does to cabinet painting & refinishing

A specification that works in a mild climate is not automatically right here. These are the local conditions that change how we scope and schedule this work.

  • Low humidity is an advantage, with a caveat

Dry Valley air helps coatings flash off. It also means a sprayed finish can skin over faster than expected, so film thickness and technique matter more, not less.

  • Dust control is everything

A sprayed cabinet finish shows every airborne particle. Containment and a clean spray environment are what separate a cabinet finish from a painted cabinet.

  • Sun-facing kitchens

Strong Valley light through a kitchen window reads sheen unforgivingly. We'll recommend a sheen that suits how much direct light the room gets.

Questions

Cabinet Painting & Refinishing questions

Anything not covered here, ask on the walkthrough. We’d rather over-explain than surprise you.

How long does cabinet refinishing take?

Typically four to seven days for a kitchen, driven by cure time between coats rather than by labour hours. Rushing that step is the most common reason refinished cabinets chip later.

Can I use my kitchen while you work?

Mostly, yes. Where we can spray doors and drawer fronts off the property, you keep your appliances, sink and counters through most of the project. You're just without cabinet doors for a few days.

Is refinishing worth it, or should I replace the cabinets?

If the boxes are solid and the layout works, refinishing gets you a new-looking kitchen for a fraction of replacement cost. If the boxes are failing, the layout is wrong, or you need different dimensions, replacement is the better spend.

We'll tell you which one your kitchen is on the walkthrough. It's an easy call to make in person and a bad one to guess at over the phone.

Will the finish chip or peel?

A sprayed cabinet finish is only as good as the degreasing, abrasion and priming underneath it, and as good as the cure time it was given. That's exactly where our process spends its time.

Can you change the colour of stained wood cabinets?

Yes, either as a painted finish over a bonding primer, or by stripping and re-staining where you want to keep the grain visible. We do both; the right choice depends on the wood and the look you're after.
