Wood Staining & Refinishing

Wood Staining and Refinishing in Phoenix, AZ

Sun does more damage to exposed wood in the Valley than anything else. A west-facing front door, a patio beam, a deck or a stained garage door will grey out, dry and check while the paint on the wall beside it still looks fine.

We strip, sand and refinish exterior and interior woodwork and metalwork across Phoenix and the surrounding Valley: doors, gates, beams, decks, railings, mantels and wrought iron. We match stains and specify topcoats for the exposure the piece actually gets.

What’s included

What you get with wood staining & refinishing

Every item below appears as a line on your written estimate, so you can compare our scope against any other bid without guessing what each one covers.

  • 01

Strip or sand back to sound material

Failed finish removed rather than recoated. A new topcoat over a lifting old one fails at the same rate as the layer beneath it.

  • 02

    Stain matching

Colour matched to an adjacent element, a sample, or the original finish, tested on the actual wood before we commit to the whole piece.

  • 03

    Grain and defect work

Checking, dents and end-grain repaired or filled where the finish would otherwise highlight them.

  • 04

    Topcoat specified for exposure

A west-facing door, a covered patio beam and an interior mantel each get a different topcoat decision. Exterior pieces in full Valley sun need a UV-resistant film.

  • 05

    Metal refinishing

Iron gates, railings and security doors stripped of rust and failed coating, primed with a rust-inhibitive primer, then finished in an even enamel.

  • 06

    Reinstall and adjust

Hardware refitted, doors rehung and adjusted, gates re-set so they swing and latch correctly.

Preparation

How the surface gets ready

This sequence is most of the hours on a wood staining & refinishing job, and it is the part that decides whether the finish still looks right in year five. It is also the part that gets skipped by the cheapest bid you receive.

  1. 1Assess the pieceWood species, existing finish type and exposure all change the approach. We identify all three before quoting.
  2. 2Protect surroundingsAdjacent stucco, glass, hardware, flooring and landscaping masked and covered.
  3. 3Strip and sandOld finish removed, surface sanded through grits so the stain takes evenly rather than blotching.
  4. 4Stain and sealStain applied and wiped to a consistent depth, then sealed.
  5. 5TopcoatMultiple thin topcoats with sanding between, built to a film that will actually hold up outdoors.

Arizona conditions

What this climate does to wood staining & refinishing

A specification that works in a mild climate is not automatically right here. These are the local conditions that change how we scope and schedule this work.

  • UV is what kills exterior wood finishes here

A stained door in full afternoon Valley sun is the hardest-working finish on a house. It needs a UV-resistant topcoat and it needs maintenance recoating sooner than a shaded piece.

  • Heat and movement

Large temperature swings move wood. Finishes on exterior doors and gates have to accommodate that, which is another reason a brittle old film needs to come off rather than be recoated.

  • Iron and rust

Monsoon moisture plus dust starts rust at the base of gates and railings. Stripping to bare metal and using a rust-inhibitive primer is the only fix that lasts.

  • Maintenance is normal, not a failure

Exterior wood in this climate is a maintenance item. We'll tell you honestly how often the piece will want a maintenance coat given where it sits.

Questions

Wood Staining & Refinishing questions

Anything not covered here, ask on the walkthrough. We’d rather over-explain than surprise you.

Can you restore a sun-damaged front door?

Usually yes. The failed finish is sanded back, the wood is repaired where it has checked or dried out, then it is re-stained and topcoated with a UV-resistant film.

If the door has delaminated or the joinery has failed, we'll tell you it needs a carpenter or a replacement rather than take your money for a finish that won't hold.

Do you stain decks and patio woodwork?

Yes. Weathered decking is stripped, sanded and sealed with a stain system chosen for the traffic and exposure the deck gets.

Can you refinish wrought iron gates and railings?

Yes. Rust and failed coating are removed, bare metal is primed with a rust-inhibitive primer, then finished in an even enamel.

Can you match the stain on my existing woodwork?

We match to an adjacent piece or a sample and test on the actual wood first, because the same stain reads differently on different species and different ages of timber.
