Case study

Sun-Bleached Front Door Restoration

Sun-bleached oak sanded back and re-stained to a deep walnut under a UV-resistant topcoat.

The same door restored to a rich walnut finish with visible grain and sheen
Faded light oak front door with dry, sun-bleached grain

The door sun-bleached and dry, then restored to a deep walnut with the grain reading clearly again.

Drag the handle, or focus it and use the arrow keys, to wipe between the two photographs.

The challenge

A west-facing oak entry door with a finish that had failed under Valley sun: greyed, dry and losing colour depth in the grain.

An entry door is the most closely inspected surface on a house, and it is also the hardest-working finish on it.

Scope of work

  • Failed finish stripped and sanded back to sound wood
  • Grain and surface defects addressed
  • Re-stained to a deep walnut
  • UV-resistant topcoat system built in multiple coats
  • Hardware removed, refitted and door re-adjusted

Surface preparation

  • Adjacent stucco, glazing, hardware and threshold masked and protected.
  • Old finish removed rather than recoated. A new topcoat over a lifting film fails at the rate of the layer beneath it.
  • Sanded through grits so the stain would take evenly instead of blotching.
  • Dry, checked areas of grain addressed before staining.

Coating and finish system

  • Stain applied and wiped back to a consistent depth, tested on the actual door before committing to the full face.
  • Sealed, then topcoated in multiple thin coats with sanding between them, built to a film that will hold up in direct exposure.
  • Hardware refitted and the door rehung and adjusted to close and latch correctly.

Scheduling considerations

Worked in place with the entry protected, sequenced so the door was serviceable overnight.

The result

Deep walnut colour with the grain reading clearly again, under a topcoat specified for the exposure the door actually gets.

Because it faces the afternoon sun, this is a finish that will want a maintenance recoat on a cycle, something we tell owners up front rather than after.
