The challenge
A wrought iron gate with rust breaking through the old coating, worst at the base where dust and monsoon moisture collect.
Painting over rust would have looked acceptable for one season and then bled back through.
Scope of work
- Rust and failed coating removed to bare metal
- Rust-inhibitive primer applied
- Even bronze enamel finish
- Surrounding walls masked and protected
Surface preparation
- Surrounding stucco walls and hardscape masked off before any abrasion started.
- Rust and lifting coating removed back to bare, sound metal, particularly at the base and at welded joints.
- Surfaces cleaned of dust and residue before priming.
Coating and finish system
- Rust-inhibitive primer applied to all bare metal, including the areas that will never be seen but are where corrosion restarts.
- Bronze enamel finish built to an even film across bars, frame and detail.
- Gate re-set so it swings and latches correctly after refinishing.
Scheduling considerations
Worked in place with the entry kept secure and usable between shifts.
The result
An even bronze film with no rust bleed-through and no thin spots at the joints.
Because it was taken back to bare metal and correctly primed, the failure clock restarts rather than continuing from where it was.
