Case study

Wet Bar Millwork in Black Lacquer

Wet bar millwork sprayed to a black lacquer film, with glass uppers against a white quartz backsplash.

Phoenix wet bar with black lacquered cabinets, glass uppers and a white quartz backsplash

The challenge

A wet bar built as a feature of the room, specified in a dark lacquer finish. At that sheen, on cabinetry viewed from a few feet away, every substrate defect and every airborne particle shows.

The finish had to be consistent across doors, drawer fronts, end panels and the glass-fronted uppers.

Scope of work

  • Sprayed black lacquer finish to bar cabinetry, drawer fronts and end panels
  • Glass-front upper cabinets finished inside and out
  • Substrate preparation to the flatness a high-sheen finish requires
  • Adjacent wall and ceiling surfaces coordinated with the finish

Surface preparation

  • Surfaces brought up to the flatness a dark, high-sheen film demands. This is the longest stage of the job and the one that decides the result.
  • Full containment and dust control around the work area, with a clean spray environment established before any finish went on.
  • Doors and drawer fronts removed and finished flat; boxes masked and sprayed in place.
  • Bonding primer sprayed and sanded flat between coats.

Coating and finish system

  • Lacquer built in multiple thin sprayed coats with the correct flash time between them.
  • Glass-front uppers finished so the interior faces read as deliberately as the exteriors.
  • Finish left to harden before doors were rehung and hardware fitted.

Scheduling considerations

Sequenced around the other finishing trades so the sprayed film was not exposed to construction dust while it was still soft.

Cure time between coats governed the programme rather than labour hours.

The result

An even black lacquer film across every face of the bar, holding a consistent sheen from door to drawer front to end panel.

The white quartz backsplash and glass uppers read as intended because the surrounding finish is flat and consistent.
