Case study

Kitchen Cabinet Refinishing and Island Repaint

Dated cabinetry re-stained and lacquered, with the island finished in a custom navy, and no boxes replaced.

The same Phoenix kitchen finished, with warm stained cabinets and a navy island

Cabinets in primer with the floor fully papered, then the finished kitchen with warm stained runs and a custom navy island.

Drag the handle, or focus it and use the arrow keys, to wipe between the two photographs.

The challenge

The kitchen's layout and cabinet boxes were sound, but the finish was dated and worn where it got handled: around the range, along drawer edges and at the sink run.

Replacement would have meant tearing out serviceable cabinetry. The brief was to change the look of the room without changing the layout, and to end up with a finish that would survive a working family kitchen.

Scope of work

  • Full refinish of upper and lower cabinetry and drawer fronts
  • Island finished in a contrasting custom navy
  • Hardware removed and reinstalled
  • Adjacent wall and ceiling surfaces repainted to suit the new cabinet colour

Surface preparation

  • Layout photographed and every door, drawer front and hinge numbered to its opening.
  • Doors and hardware removed; boxes masked, counters and appliances covered, containment set with protected floor route to the exit.
  • All faces and edges degreased, heaviest around the range and above the hood, then rinsed and dried.
  • Surfaces scuffed to a uniform mechanical key; dents and chips filled; profiles and edges hand-sanded.

Coating and finish system

  • Bonding primer sprayed, then sanded flat before finish coats.
  • Doors and drawer fronts sprayed flat, off the boxes, so the film laid out evenly instead of sagging on a vertical face.
  • Island finished in a custom navy to contrast with the warm stained runs.
  • Finish given cure time before doors were rehung, hinges adjusted for even gaps, and hardware reinstalled.

Scheduling considerations

Run as an occupied-home project. With doors and drawer fronts sprayed away from the boxes, the household kept its sink, counters and appliances through most of the project.

Cure time between coats set the schedule. Cabinet work of this kind typically runs four to seven days for that reason.

The result

The room reads as a new kitchen with the original boxes still in place, and the island reads as a deliberate design decision rather than an accent.

The finish sits as a sprayed film with even sheen across doors, drawer fronts and boxes.
